Dog Licensing
The City License Program was put into place to protect the public health and safety by ensuring that dogs are currently vaccinated against rabies. Additionally, the license tag serves a dual purpose as an identification device. The number on the license corresponds with the guardian's contact information. Therefore, if your pet becomes lost or runs away and is wearing their City license he/she can be returned to you.

A City of Boulder dog license is required for ALL dogs over the age of four months, living within the city limits of Boulder. The license must be obtained within 30 days of acquisition of the dog, or within 30 days of moving to the City. ALL dogs are required to wear their City license tag on their collar or harness at all times.

In order to obtain a City license your dog must be currently inoculated with a rabies vaccination. The first vaccination is required at the age of four months and needs to be updated every one or three years depending on the type of vaccination given. Keeping your animals current on their vaccinations is an effective preventative for the contraction and the spread of various diseases.

Although cats are not restricted by leash or licensing laws in the Boulder area, they should be fitted with an expandable safety collar containing a personal identification tag and/or have a microchip. To better ensure your cat’s safety and health, consider having them as an indoor-only companion.
